What is a volute for in a centrifugal pump:
The volute in a centrifugal pump is an essential part that plays a crucial role in transforming kinetic energy into pressure energy. It receives the fluid that was driven by the impeller (rotor) and redirects this fluid flow to the pump outlet, converting the kinetic energy into pressure potential energy.
How the volute works in a centrifugal pump:
When the impeller rotates, it creates a centrifugal movement in the fluid. This creates an area of low pressure in the center of the pump. The volute is responsible for receiving this moving fluid, gradually increasing its cross section as it moves towards the pump outlet. This increase in cross section results in a decrease in fluid velocity and an increase in pressure, converting kinetic energy into pressure potential energy.
Types of volutes for centrifugal pumps:
Simple Volute:
The most common and basic. It has a simple shape and is effective in many applications.
Split Volute:
Also known as a multi-cut volute, it facilitates maintenance by allowing easy access to the impeller and other internal parts without completely disassembling the volute.
Double Suction Volute:
It has suction inlets on both sides of the volute, balancing the axial loads on the impeller and shaft. This reduces wear and increases operational stability.
Volute with Diffuser:
Can be combined with a diffuser to increase energy efficiency and pump performance.
Specialized Volute:
Designed to meet specific application requirements, optimizing performance in particular conditions.
